Postby Sky Blue Strawberry » Wed Jan 31, 2007 3:43 pm

Anyone know of a good programme (free naturally!) which which convert a WMA to an MP3 file? Have tried a couple that I found on a google search but they don't work

I used one I found on Google. Can't remember it's name but it was probably one of the first that came up!
It won't work if the .wma file is protected. By default, the files are protected when you rip a CD in WMP, so there is no way of playing these files in other apps such as iTunes. :(

You use MCE - do you not have Windows Audio Converter built in?

Copy and past -

Code: Select all
C:\Program Files\Windows Plus\Audio Converter\AudioConverter.exe

into Start / Run - and see if you have it.

By default, WMP protects files when a CD is ripped. I haven't found a way round it yet :(

I have never had a problem with it, doesn't just unticking "copy protect music" - remove the copy protection?

Edit - it seems so -

From the WMP help file -

What happens if I decide to copy protect music that I rip?

If you copy protect the tracks that you rip from a CD, the ripped files are protected, which means that media usage rights are required to play, burn, or sync the file. If you copy the files to another computer and try to use them, you might be prompted to download media usage rights for that computer. There are a limited number of times that you can download media usage rights for your ripped files.

If you intend to use your ripped music on multiple computers, do not copy protect the files. If you want to limit the distribution of any songs that you rip, turn on copy protection before ripping. Note that you can't remove copy protection from a file once it has been applied. Copy protection is only available when you rip music to a Windows Media Audio (WMA) format. For information about turning copy protection on or off, see Change settings for ripping music.

Yes,......Benny [smilie=icon_mrhappy.gif]

It can do both directions. You have to download the appropriate codecs. See http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central.htm

Re: WMA to MP3 converter

On some forum I was advised to try AudioConverter Studio. I use this program ever since. It converts audio files quickly and with a minimum effort. It combines two tools that are most frequently used in music processing – a CD Ripper and an Audio Converter.
