Why single out McSheffrey in particular? Malaga has been paid and only played two games. To be left out by three managerial regimes since signing suggests something isn't quite right there. While McSheffrey's second stint has been an abject failure, as many of us feared it would be, his first was very productive and his goals kept us up a couple of times, and he got us £4m in transfer fees.

But of course he's the only one that came through the academy isn't he....

With McSheffrey gone that's all of those who's contracts we inexplicably extended a few years ago (Shef, Bell and McPake) who've had to be paid up. Great decision making yet again!

Yep thats right! In a nutshell I think Coventry City has been good for Gary Mcsheffrey rather than the other way round.

BIt harsh. He was a youngster that came thru the academy so didnt cost a transfer fee. Did well for the club for several years and made us £4m ish in money. Did ok (ish) at Brum and re-signed. 2nd period was generally a disapointment and whilst he had ability he didnt perform. He has had injury problems but even so he is no where near the player he was went we sold him. I think every fan could see that but we made a strange decision to extend his contract. Good luck to him but glad that his wages are off the balance sheet.

No, he just got released at the end of his contract. Was offered a contract somewhere (possibly Oldham) but turned it down allegedly because they wouldn't pay for his accommodation on top of his wages, and the manager just instantly called a halt to it. Boy's in for a bit of a shock in the real world....

McSheffrey was here in total for 11 years as a paid pro. If we offset his wages against a £4m transfer fee (he didn't cost anything either time he joined us), it works out at £363,636 pa, or £7k pw.

During his decent years before joining Brum I reckon he'd have been on slightly more than that, but early on and during this second spell less, so on average I reckon financially it's about neutral. I've not bothered trying to put a value on his goals etc and the part they played in keeping us up on a few occasions and the financial benefit of that as it's a team game, so for convenience I've written that off against the cost of his academy training. Obviously in an ideal world an employee would make you more money than you spend on them (otherwise what's the point of employing them) but this is football so doesn't follow normal rules.

While I'm not saying he hasn't earned a good living and benefitted from this club, of the three released McShef probably gave more to CCFC in a financial sense than the other two.

In fact, thinking about it, Coventry have probably spent less on his wages in his time here than Brum did in his few years there when he was rumoured to be on £20k+ a week.
