"SPEED GOLF" would be a good Olympic sport. The winner: - the first to put it in all eighteen holes! Bolt might beat Woods at this.

The Republic of Ireland's three-time major winner Padraig Harrington told a news conference in Copenhagen that the Olympics would soon surpass the majors in importance.

"I do believe in time the Olympic gold will become the most important event in golf and I don't believe it will take that long," he said.

Does anyone really agree with that? I'm not so sure which is why I'm unsure about the move even though I'm a golf fan.

Having it in is brilliant, its easily one of the highest participated sports in the world and deserves to be put in.

As to whether or not a gold medal will be seen as more important than a major, i really dont think so. Majors are what drives golfers, and that will always be the way. Competing against the best players in the world, in a major championship and winning, is and always will be what they all want to win. And i doubt that all of the worlds best will be taking part in the Olympics. I'd assume they'd put a limit on the number of players from each country so that 45 yanks dont turn up. This alone would diminsih the value of a gold medal, especially compared to a major.

My analogy would be to compare it to boxing. Yes a gold medal in boxing is great, but its not the biggest prize in the sport. A major championship will always be more important to golfers.

Boxing in the olympics is for amateurs. The Olympics is the pinnacle for amateur boxers.

Golf shouldn't be in it and nor should tennis or football. For all the other sports currently included I'd say the olympics is the most precious prize.

The olympics set a limit to the number of medals/competitors so every event included is one less that can be allocated elsewhere. Personally I'd rather see some of the current sports having fuller programs than new sports being introduced. The world track cycling championships have 18 events but in the olympics they only have 10.

I agree with Timbo. The events in the Olympics should be the pinnacle of that sport. Does anyone give a shit about the result of the Olympic football / tennis tournaments? It's not even high priority for the participants, and I imagine it will be the same for golf and rugby.

None them should be included in my opinion.

Aye - Timbo and Steve-o pretty much hit on my point.Olympics should be the pinnacle and in the new sports it'll never be the case - despite what Harrington says in the article.
