Teenage triple jump champion 'drove getaway car in £25k security van robbery'

A teenage Olympic hopeful acted as a getaway driver in a £25,000 security van robbery, a court heard today.

Under-20s national triple jump champion Daniel Lewis, 19, allegedly gave a fake name and said he was 'only the driver' after police stopped him at the wheel of a Mercedes.

Snaresbrook Crown Court heard Lewis drove away three raiders after they robbed a Group 4 security guard delivering cash to a branch of NatWest Bank in Chingford, Essex.

The A-level student was one of two getaway drivers recruited to collect the robbers following the raid in Station Road on January 29 last year, jurors heard.

Security guard Colin Stokes was left bruised and bloodied by hooded attackers who snatched a £25,000 cashbox before fleeing in a stolen Audi A4, said prosecutor Michael Shaw.

The gang dumped the Audi before jumping into the waiting Mercedes, the court heard.

'That car was being driven by Mr Lewis,' Mr Shaw said. 'The cashbox was taken from the Audi and put in the boot of the Mercedes and hidden under a pushchair.'

'They headed north but unfortunately for our robbers coming the other way was an unmarked police car.'

Mr Shaw said officers described the defendants as 'laughing and joking'.

But the prosecutor added: 'The demeanour of the occupants changed in that split second, the officers noticed as they approached the Mercedes that the occupants where all very nervous.'

Lewis gave his name as Richard Lewis and a false date of birth before blurting out: 'I was only the driver,' the court heard.

Officers found the cashbox in the Mercedes' boot, Mr Shaw said.

Lewis - then a member of the British team for the 2012 Olympic team - and his three accomplices all refused to comment in police interview.

Police seized Lewis's mobile phone and discovered text messages implicating the sportsman, the court heard.

Lets hope this a-level triple jump star isnt found guilty. He obviously had nothing to do with this vicious armed robbery and hopefully the jury will see what an innocent lad he is and not stop him from becoming a role model for all youngsters out there.

No point locking him up - he'll just hop it by skipping bail and jump on a plane abroad
