Belgian Grand Prix

Postby Sky Blue Steve-o » Sun Sep 07, 2008 8:28 pm

The first bit of decent racing in F1 for years, and the Ferrari-biased FIA have to go and ruin it by changing the result.

Hamilton cut the chicane to avoid a crash, let Raikkonen back past (which is what the rules say he has to do), and then overtook him fairly and squarely at the next corner. McLaren have got the in-car data which shows that Hamilton lifted off the accelerator on the straight and that Raikkonen was doing 6kmph faster than Hamilton as they crossed the finish line. Hopefully the original result will be restored at the Appeal, although I somewhat doubt it from the FIA.

Not really a F1 fan, but if it is as cut and dried as you say so Steve-o then it is a disgrace.

no suprise to see the result change, can see both sides of the argument though and its not so clear cut in my opinion

hamilton gained a huge advantage by cutting the chicane... not the mere, letting Kimi pass by a few inches

had lewis let kimi pull further away, he might have got away with it

my initial reaction was that he would be penalised... so it came as no suprise to see him in 3rd now

The rule says that if a driver takes a position by cutting a corner, he has to give the position back. On the run up to the hairpin, Raikkonen is clearly ahead of Hamilton. Hamilton even switches sides and passes directly behind Raikkonen.

having seen it again.. why does Lewis cut the chicane, to me, Kimi closed the door and Lewis should have backed off... he has definitely gained huge advantage by cutting the chicane.

about the rule above, he hardly gave position back... he let Kimi poke his nose ahead

gonna be interesting to see what happens with this

It was a terrible decision by the FIA. Hamilton was right on Kimi's bumper before the chicane so quite why he'd have to let Kimi overtake him and pull away I'll never know. He tried to overtake him, Kimi shut the door, but to avoid an accident Hamilton cut the chicane. He then instantly gave the position bac but was obviously the quicker car as he'd gained about 4 seconds on Kimi in just a few previous laps. Hopefully the FIA will see sense and change the decision as it's outrageous.

Agree that Hamilton did nothing wrong, he was forced across the chican e to avoid hitting the Ferrari, gave the position back, and it cannot be argued that he only let him inch ahead as his line took him across Kim's line directly behind him. Kimi had lost a lot of speeed and knew he was in trouble.

I think a key factor in seeing how unfair it is is that Massi and Ferrari didn't protest about the move, it was only the race stewards.
Have fun

Sebastien Bourdais was interviewed on Radio 5 yesterday and he said all the drivers thought Hamiltons penalty was fair.
