It ran awful yes, however what needs to be borne in mind is it was a 14/1 shot when I posted the tip. Before the off it was an 11/2 shot. So if you are happy to get your money back plus a small profit before the race has even started then you haven't done anything wrong.
Also, the guy who I get the tips from has finished in profit for 23 out of the last 24 years. He doesn't bother tipping small price horses, only long shots. With this in mind, if you were backing a tenner win per tip, you only need one return every 14 races and you are still level, and having followed his tips for the last 3 years I can assure you I'm in front by a good distance... it's only my own fancies that send me skint. :(

I had £5 on Art Connoisseur this afternoon @ 8/1. Not a bad return!

My tipster has tipped this horse again. :? It's running in the 20.40 at Towcester. 14 with most firms but 16's with Skybet and Sporting odds. I will be laying it to get my losses back on it from last week. [smilie=icon_mrhappy.gif]

It is. I backed this same horse last week @ 14/1. On the off I could have layed back @ 11/2. I could have covered my stake money and had a free bet before the race had even started, however, there are no guarantees the price will shorten.

so if I back this say 20 quid at 14-1 and then it was possible to lay it 5-1, I would win at least 60 quid :?: What sort of win price would it have to be to lay it at 5-1 :?:

£20 @ 14's = £280 winnings.

If you were to lay it @ 5/1 for your £20 stake money, you have lost nothing but are still in the position of potentially winning £180.

Alternatively, you could lay it @ 5/1 for £40, guaranteeing at least £20 profit, if it doesn't win, or £80 if it does.

Just a quick question about the exchanges Real as I've never used Betfair before (possibly the ugliest non-user-friendly website ever)...

When you lay a horse, do you have to wait for someone to take your odds? Or do you definitely get what you lay?

I ask this because: in Boss' example - if a horse is available to back at 14s, no one in their right mind would go and back it at the 5/1 that Boss is offering.

You have to wait for the bet to be matched mate. My dodgy tip from last week highlights how the price can change, I'd backed it at 14/1 earlier in the day but by the off it was available @ 11/2, and as my Uncle always preaches, take the guaranteed money. Good logic if only I'd listen to him. [smilie=icon_mrhappy.gif]
