Passwords

Postby CoC » Tue Mar 22, 2011 12:32 am

There seems to be some idiots/Bots, going round the various forums attempting to brute force hack members accounts. They usually work by getting access to the memberlist page and taking user names from there, but as ours is visible only to registered and logged in members they must be scraping the index page to get the names which is why it only appears to be those names that are being flagged.

All accounts have a limit of three attempts before you need to answer a security question to be able to log in, so that is slowing them down a lot. I have been looking at the IP's and it seem that the majority of traffic is coming through the tor network so I have blacklisted all tor exit nodes to the server for now and will manually block all IP's that attempt to login and fail on more than one account.

I recommend that anyone who has a simple password, to change it to something a little more complex,

  • Do not use dictionary words, places or phrases these are the easiest to crack.
  • Try to use numbers or symbols.
  • Use AlTerNatiNG cased letter.

Also make sure your Email address is up to date and able to receive incoming email (i.e. not full) in the case you forget your password you are able to get another one sent to you.

Consider using something like https://lastpass.com/ to manage all of your passwords. Works a treat.
